“Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio” Is Set To Be Released On Netflix

Pinocchio is a well-known story, be it the younger generation or the older generation. The protagonist in Carlo Collodi’s 1883 Italian book has long been a pop culture phenomenon, due to the greater accessibility that Disney’s 1940 musical adaptation made available to audiences of different ages and languages. Guillermo del Toro is enlivening the classic story in a darker, more twisted interpretation.

He’s done an excellent job with Pan’s Labyrinth, bringing to life the complex and tortured universe within the film. Pinocchio, perhaps, will do the same with its eponymous iconic character. Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio has long sparked debate among fans as well as movie buffs. The filmmaker has never worked in the field of animation, so there are very interesting revelations. The video shows a lot about the painting, including the sombre cartoon design that speaks its own language.

The film’s cast is impressive, starring some of Hollywood’s most famous figures. Gregory Mann will play the eponymous Pinocchio, while David Bradley will play the iconic Geppetto. Tilda Swinton will play the fairy, while Ewan McGregor will play Sebastian J. Cricket. Other notable actors include Finn Wolfhard, Ron Perlman, Cate Blanchett, Tim Blake Nelson, John Turturro and Burn Gorman.

Del Toro explains his decision to use stop-motion animation despite the extra cost and unfamiliarity with the medium:

“I believe the beauty of stop-motion animation, and the reason it has a very demanding and fragile condition as an approach to production and storytelling, is because it [needs] roughly the rigor and distribution is like a real person painting…

You are physically planning and building a scene, aging the walls and creating all the props. Not only should it fit the context, but it should also be suitable for ‘hand-held performers’.” The film, now available on Netflix, held the festival earlier and won critical acclaim. It currently has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 97% and will likely do well in the streaming market as well.
