In a heartbreaking incident on the Maine coast this morning, the historic 141-year-old schooner, Grace Bailey, met a tragic fate in a devastating accident that claimed one life and left three others injured. The vessel, part of a four-day cruise headed to Rockland, Maine, suffered a catastrophic event when its mast broke around 10:00 a.m. on Monday.
The accident prompted an immediate response from officers who administered CPR to the injured. Grace Bailey, unfortunately, succumbed to her injuries, suffering a severe head injury, while two others sustained crush and spinal injuries. Despite efforts to save her, Grace was pronounced dead after being transported to shore by EMS personnel.
The incident unfolded just one mile east of Rockport, where 33 individuals were on board the vessel. According to witnesses, the mast broke suddenly without warning, even in calm morning winds. The ship, which lacked mechanical propulsion and relied on towing, was towed back to its dock after the tragic cruise.
Rockland Harbor EMS swiftly transported the injured victims to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport. Meanwhile, the U.S. Coast Guard has initiated an investigation into the accident to determine its cause and circumstances. Eyewitness accounts from cruise passengers indicated that there were no sharp movements before the mast broke, deepening the mystery surrounding the tragic event.
