Convicted drug dealer Glenn Agliotti has died at Gauteng hospital, local police confirmed. According to Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, authorities were notified of the hospital incident on Friday night and have begun an investigation into Agliotti’s death.
Masondo stated, “An investigative file has been opened at Douglasdale police station, and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.”
Agliotti’s involvement played a key role in the corruption conviction of former police chief Jackie Selebi in 2010. Selebi was found guilty of accepting money and gifts from Agliotti, who, in return, was protected from attacks. criminal investigation, as reported by the Mail & Guardian.
During the trial, it was alleged that Selebi received more than Rs 1.2 million from Agliotti and also shared secret police reports, leading to charges of obstruction of justice. Selebi’s case gained considerable attention when he became the first black national police commissioner to be found guilty of bribery in connection with a drug lord.
After being sentenced to 15 years in prison, Selebi was released on medical parole in 2012, which is less than a year into his term. He later died at a hospital in Pretoria in 2015 at the age of 64.
Glenn Agliotti’s Cause of Death: Reports indicate that Selebi had diabetes and kidney disease.
The New York Times described the Selebi trial as a “failure” for one of the nation’s prominent figures, marked by arrogance and greed.
Furthermore, Agliotti was also implicated in the 2005 murder of mining billionaire Brett Kebble. It was previously reported that Agliotti owed his business partner, John Stratton, Rs 15 million.
According to Andrew Vincent Minnaar, Kebble’s former housekeeper, there were discussions about money about three weeks before Kebble’s death.
The whereabouts of documents relating to the financial affairs of Kebble’s mansion remain uncertain, as they were either destroyed by Stratton or taken to Cape Town following Kebble’s death.
