City of Middletown Police Department, NY release a statement,

“It is with deep regret that the City of Middletown Police Department announces the death of Detective Fredrick Slanovec, who passed away unexpectedly at his residence on Monday, September 4, 2023. Detective Slanovec served the City of Middletown Police Department for 17.5 years, appointed as a police officer on January 30, 2006. Detective Slanovec made many valuable contributions to our agency during his career, and the department expresses our sincere condolences to his family and friends”.

Detective Slanovec had dedicated 17 years to the Middletown Police Department and had maintained an exemplary career until events last May cast a shadow over his reputation. During an off-duty incident at the Olde Erie Restaurant in Middletown, he slapped a 14-year-old boy and forcefully pushed him into a brick wall in front of shocked onlookers during a communion party. This act led to Slanovec being placed on paid administrative leave while facing both workplace and criminal investigations.

Subsequently, Slanovec was charged and pleaded guilty on July 13 to disorderly conduct. The Orange County District Attorney’s Office revealed that he was intoxicated during the unprovoked altercation and ordered him to undergo one year of alcohol abuse treatment and monitoring as part of his plea agreement.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the City of Middletown Police Department acknowledged Slanovec’s contributions during his career and expressed condolences to his family and friends. At the time of his guilty plea, Slanovec was also facing administrative charges related to his continued employment as a police detective. The district attorney’s office stated that they would no longer call on him to testify in cases.

District Attorney Dave Hoovler issued a statement emphasizing the importance of seeking help for substance abuse issues to prevent harm to oneself and others.
