News -:

I kindly ask for your patience as we consider this situation.

“He is seriously ill but stable.”

Authorities and sources reported that Ramirez, 52, shot himself in what appeared to be a suicide Sunday after arriving in Tampa to attend a law enforcement conference.

According to two law enforcement officials, Ramirez shot himself while being stopped on the side of Interstate 75 in a car with his wife.

After being transported to Tampa General Hospital, he underwent surgery and is currently in a critical but stable condition, according to a statement from Miami-Dade police. According to a source familiar with the situation, he is expected to survive.

The shooting is being reviewed by the Florida Highway Patrol and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

In a brief statement released early Monday, the Miami-Dade Police Department announced that it had been alerted by Tampa police that Ramirez had suffered “severe trauma.”

Miami-Dade police asked people to remember him in their prayers in a written statement.

To CBS News Miami, a senior law enforcement source involved in the investigation provided the following account of what happened prior to the shooting:

Ramirez and his wife are in Tampa for the Florida Sheriff’s Association summer meeting, which takes place Sunday at the JW Marriott. Around 6:30 p.m., the couple left the convention’s welcome event and walked out of the hotel, as an argument is said to have begun.

Law enforcement sources say that an outsider claimed to have witnessed Ramirez threatening to commit suicide.

The source told CBS Miami that “a resident saw him pull out a gun and put it in his mouth.”

Ramirez and his wife were questioned by Tampa police after an outsider called them.

Both disagreed that Ramirez had threatened to commit suicide, and because the call was made anonymously, no witnesses were available to speak to authorities.

Because of this, Tampa police have decided not to arrest Ramirez or to use the state’s Baker Act to forcefully place Ramirez in a psychiatric hospital for a period of 72 hours, which would be standard procedure if officers had reason to believe that subject posed a danger to themselves or others.

“There is not enough evidence to do anything,” the insider claimed.

When Ramirez and his wife returned to their room, the hotel staff asked them to leave and informed them that they were no longer allowed to stay at the Marriot.

Around 9 p.m. Sunday, Ramirez pulled over on the side of I-75 in the Riverview section of Tampa and shot himself in the head as they were returning from the motel to Miami. Ramirez may have lost vision in one eye, according to the source, while the extent of his injury remains unknown.

The reason behind his suspected suicide attempt is unclear.

Ramirez announced two months ago that he and Miami Mayor Dade Daniella Levine Cava will both compete as Democrats for the sheriff position in the upcoming election.

2020 saw the appointment of Carlos Gimenez, the former mayor of Miami-Dade, as police chief.

Two years later, Ramirez was promoted by Levine Cava to acting director of public safety, allowing him to manage the Miami-Dade Fire Brigade and the police force. After that, the role was given to him in perpetuity.

The mayor’s office said in a written statement released Monday that she traveled to Tampa to visit Director Ramirez and his family in the hospital.

She said, “Sheriff Ramirez is hospitalized and in a critical but stable condition following a catastrophic injury in Tampa yesterday. “At this time, the only thing that matters is the health of Sheriff Ramirez, and I join his family, friends, and the extended families of Miami-Dade County and the Miami-Dade Police Department in praying for his speedy recovery.”

In support of Ramirez, the Miramar Police Department also released a statement.

The company posted on social media, “Together we send positive energy and strength his way.” “May Director Ramirez find the strength and courage to overcome this ordeal, and may he recover quickly and fully.”

Stephanie Daniels, MDPD deputy director, has been appointed acting sheriff.
