News Frances Robathan

George Alagiah, who was diagnosed with colon cancer nine years ago, spoke emotionally about his fear of losing his wife of nearly 40 years.

The BBC reporter, who died today aged 67 after being diagnosed with the disease in 2014, previously spoke of the only thing he had planned to do with his wife Frances Robathan until the very last minute and how the thought of not being able to do it had ‘haunted’ him.

One of the station’s longest-serving news readers, the Sri Lankan-born journalist revealed to the Sunday Telegraph last year that his only ambition in life was to hold his wife’s hand until her death.

George asked, “Can I hold my wife’s hand until the last minute? That’s one of the things I want to accomplish. It bothers me.

After meeting as students at Durham University, George and Frances, Senior Partnership Advisor for the Fairtrade Foundation, got married in 1984. George admitted that he thought his illness “will finally come to me” in a January 2022 interview, but he argued that he still feels “very blessed” because of his wonderful career and family life.

George described the day he received his diagnosis in 2014 while speaking on the Desperately Seeking Wisdom podcast. It took him a while to realize what he “needs to do” to maintain his optimism. “I had to pause and say, ‘Wait a minute. Would my life be a failure if the full stop had come now? he asked the question.

The family I have, the abilities my family has, the incredible luck of meeting (Frances), who has been my wife and lover for all these years, and the children we raised—I really don’t feel a failure when I look back and consider my journey.

News of Alagiah’s passing was revealed to the PA news agency on Monday in a statement from his agent, Mary Greenham. I regret to inform you that George Alagiah passed away peacefully today, surrounded by family and friends.

“George fought bravely, but unfortunately that battle was lost earlier today. Everyone who knows George, whether friends, colleagues or the public, loves him very much. Simply put, he is a wonderful person. My heart goes out to Fran, the boys and his extended family.

George had chemotherapy and multiple procedures, including the removal of most of his liver, after being diagnosed at stage four. He announced the end of therapy a year later, and in November he returned to BBC News At Six. But in 2017, the cancer returned.

In response to the new spread, he took a leave of absence from the studio in October 2021. He then returned in April 2022. Blood in the stool made the father-of-two realize something was wrong and since revealing his diagnosis he has urged people to take advantage of the free routine NHS testing.

Tim Davie, the BBC’s general manager, commented when Alagiiah’s agency released a statement, saying: “Across the BBC, we are all deeply saddened to hear of George. We are currently looking into his family.

“George was one of the finest and bravest journalists of his generation, covering news professionally and courageously from around the world. Audiences can tell that he’s not just a brilliant journalist; they could feel his great kindness, empathy and humanity. Everyone loves him, and we will miss him terribly.
