Former District 6000 Rotary Governor Tom Narak passes away in West Des Moines

West Des Moines, Iowa – In a somber announcement on Monday, December 18, 2023, the Rotary community mourns the loss of former District 6000 Governor, Tom Narak, who passed away after a sudden and severe stroke in Huntsville, Alabama.

News of Tom’s passing spread through a heartfelt Facebook post: “We lost a member of our family today. John’s brother-in-law, Tom Narak, passed away from a massive stroke in Huntsville, AL.”

Tom Narak’s formative years unfolded in Chicago, where he earned Bachelor’s Degrees from Morningside College. His academic pursuits continued with a Master’s Degree from Northwest Missouri State University and a Doctorate of Education from The University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Tom concluded his professional journey in 2011 as the Superintendent of Schools in West Des Moines, IA, capping a career that began as a middle school science teacher and spanned roles as a principal at various school levels. His versatility shone as he later became the Director of Government Relations for the School Administrators of Iowa until his retirement in April 2017.

Tom’s Rotary journey commenced in Schuyler, Nebraska, in 1979, during his tenure as a principal. After relocating to Iowa, he became a member of the Rotary Club of Indianola and served as its president in 2003-04. Later, he joined the Rotary Club of West Des Moines, assuming the presidency in 2013-14.

His commitment extended beyond local chapters as he actively participated in the Xicotepec Project for District 6000 since 2007. Tom also served as the District 6000 Trainer for DGs Jacque Andrew and John Ockenfels. In addition to Rotary, he volunteered as a facilitator for the RYLA program in the summer of 2016.

Tom Narak’s impact extended beyond Rotary, sitting on the Board of Trustees of Morningside College and having served on the Board of The United Way of Central Iowa. His dedication to making a difference was evident in his eagerness to help disadvantaged people, especially children. Whether through education or community service, Tom consistently strived to positively impact the lives of those in need.

As the Rotary community reflects on Tom Narak’s legacy, his lifetime of service stands as a testament to the positive influence one individual can have on their community and beyond.
