Flying Scotsman services cancelled amid crash at Aviemore Railway Station, Leaves 2 injured

A collision involving the iconic Flying Scotsman locomotive disrupted services at Aviemore Rail Station, prompting the cancellation of its services over the weekend. The incident occurred during coupling with Belmond’s Royal Scotsman train carriages, resulting in injuries to passengers. While two individuals were taken to Raigmore Hospital, three others were treated at the scene and didn’t require hospitalization.

Strathspey Steam Railway, responsible for the Flying Scotsman’s operations, swiftly cooperated with authorities and notified them of the incident. In the wake of the collision, stand-in locomotive Ivatt 46512 replaced the Flying Scotsman for Saturday and Sunday services. Despite the challenging circumstances, the railway aimed to operate various departures throughout the day, ensuring passengers could still travel.

The Royal Scotsman train carriages involved in the incident were moved for thorough inspection, allowing the resumption of services. An investigation is ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding this incident.

The collision, considered minor, occurred as the Flying Scotsman was being shunted into position for coupling. Despite the disruption and minor injuries sustained by some passengers and team members, Belmond, the owner of the Royal Scotsman train, praised the swift response of paramedics and ensured support for affected passengers, arranging their onward travel.

In this evolving situation, passengers are being kept informed, and refunds for affected services will be processed accordingly. Authorities and railway operators continue to work diligently to restore normalcy and resolve the matter, emphasizing safety and passenger satisfaction.
