Evan Lysacek won the junior national championship in 1996. He also promoted to Intermediate and won the tin medal at the 1997 Junior Olympics. During the season 1999-2000, he made his international debut as a teenager. He competed in the ISU Junior Grand Prix round from 1999 to 2000. He also won the Junior Championship in the 2000 US Championships. At the 2001 United States Championship, he made his senior national debut. He finished 10th as the third substitute for the 2003 Four Continents Championship.
