Esther Rantzen was born on June 22, 1940, to Katherine Flora (née Leverson, 1911-2005) and Henry Barnato Rantzen (1902-1992). She is from Berkhamsted in the county of Hertfordshire in England. Her parents are Jewish. Priscilla N. Taylor, her sister, is her only sister.
Her great-grandfather emigrated to England in the late 1850s and settled in Spitalfields as a cap maker. Her great-grandfather moved to a more comfortable neighborhood with the support of her brother-in-law, diamond dealer Barney Barnato (born Barnett Isaacs), who had become extremely wealthy in South Africa.
She attended Buckley Country Day School in New York and graduated in 1950. Esther later attended North London Collegiate School in Edgware, North London, a private all-girls school. She also studied English at Oxford’s Somerville College. She is a member of the Oxford University Theater Society (OUDS), the Experimental Theater Club (ETC) and the Oxford Theater Group, performing in Oxford and Edinburgh.
