After recovering from a broken leg to earn a spot in England’s squad for the women’s World Cup this month, Manchester City defender Esme Morgan said a year’s injury layoff had turned out to be a blessing in disguise.
After fracturing her lower leg in September 2021, the 22-year-old Morgan, who has earned five Lionesses caps since making her debut in October 2022, missed virtually a full season for City as well as England’s winning European Championship campaign. However, she claimed she felt renewed when she returned to the field.
There are a lot of ups and downs because, at the beginning of my rehabilitation, I had unrealistic expectations of making the Euros. At England’s recent media day in St. George’s Park, Morgan told reporters, “I wish someone had informed me: ‘There’s no chance.
“I had my sights set on the World Cup as soon as I returned from that and felt confident in myself. The World Cup was unquestionably a goal I had in mind when I returned, and I discovered that I felt better than I had ever felt.
“Because I missed football so much, taking a year off rejuvenated my mentality a little bit. Maybe shifting my outlook was a benefit in disguise.
As the fourth-ranked squad and defending European champions at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, Morgan was relieved to hear from England manager Sarina Wiegman that she had been called up for the Lionesses. According to Morgan, “I had an underlying confidence that I had done enough (to be called-up).”

I was a nervous mess so I thought I can’t have it on loud because I’ll jump out of my skin when it goes off, so I had my phone on vibration the entire morning, Morgan added with a giggle. The Lionesses, who finished fourth in France four years ago and won bronze in Canada in 2015, face Haiti on July 22 in Brisbane to open their World Cup run. Group D opponents for them include China and Denmark.
