News Emily Maitlis

Emily Maitlis, former Newsnight presenter, claimed that it was “nonsense” for the BBC to criticize her for making comments about Dominic Cummings on the air, and expressed concern that increased political pressure had forcing the media to self-censor.

The BBC said Maitlis breached her fairness rules in 2020 when she claimed “the whole country could see” the prime minister’s adviser at the time breached lockdown regulations.

Maitlis, who has since left the BBC, claimed that the decision was made “without any legal process” and that it could serve as “a message of reassurance” to the authorities.

A BBC official replied, “The BBC places the highest priority on objectivity and appropriate accuracy and we apply these standards to coverage on all issues.

“As we have previously stated in relation to Newsnight, any suggestion that we acted under pressure from the government or Number 10 is false. The BBC determined that the show violated its editorial standards, and that decision is still in effect.

“Why did the BBC immediately and publicly seek to confirm the opinion of a government spokesman, without any due process?” Maitlis asked a question during a lecture at the Edinburgh Television Festival.

It doesn’t make any sense for an outfit that is famous for its strict adherence to the process. Unless it can send a guaranteed message to the government?

She continued, “Put this in the context of the BBC board, where another Conservative Party employee – a former Downing Street cameraman and former consultant to a BBC rival is GB News – currently sitting, acting as the BBC’s impartial arbiter.”

Sir Robbie Gibb, Theresa May’s former communications director could be who she’s alluding to.

She further revealed that Mr Cummings had personally contacted her to offer assistance during the chaos at the time.

The adviser did not break the rules, according to statements made by both Mr Cummings and the prime minister at the time.

Speaking Wednesday during the festival’s keynote, Maitlis claimed that the media had failed to respond to attacks from populist parties and risked losing the trust of viewers.

The 10th advisor’s controversial trip to Barnard Castle was the subject of a Newsnight episode that Maitlis featured in May 2020 by saying: “Dominic Cummings broke the rules – the country can see that and the government cannot see that.”

She said in her statement that “a complaint phone call was made from Downing Street to BBC News management” the next morning. The BBC quickly determined that the monologue violated standards of “reasonable fairness”, in what she said.
