Ellen Ochoa was the first woman from Latin America to enter space thirty years ago. She visited her alma mater on Friday for a name change ceremony attended by many individuals, including the university’s principal.
The Ellen Ochoa Pavilion is now the name of San Diego State University’s West Commons mall. “Like others have inspired me, I hope this building will inspire a generation of Aztecs to reach for the stars,” said Ochoa.
Ellen Ochoa, born and raised in La Mesa, graduated from SDSU with a bachelor’s degree in physics in 1980. Ochoa oversaw the NASA mission as director of the Johnson Space Center for several years.
However, she quickly rose to the status of an astronaut, and 30 years ago she performed her first mission aboard the space shuttle Discovery. Three more space missions will follow.
“It’s amazing to see the world from space. “I had the opportunity to fly over the Port of San Diego, which is really special,” Ochoa said.
She commented: “In my first two flights, we looked at the ozone hole and the problem of ozone depletion and the earth’s atmosphere. “During my third and fourth flights, we contributed to the construction of the international space station,” the pilot added.
Ochoa’s college career at SDSU had many twists and turns. She said she switched her major five times before switching to physics. She later earned a doctorate in electrical engineering from Stanford.
Ochoa was in the music program during college. Ochoa most likely holds the record for being the first astronaut to play the flute in space, according to SDSU president Adela de la Torre, who spoke at the ceremony.

Now retired, Ochoa. But she claims that she remains enthusiastic about NASA’s efforts, especially the prospect of a second moon landing.
According to Ochoa, the Artemis program involves sending humans to the moon first and then figuring out what it will take to travel to Mars afterwards.
Ochoa’s three siblings also received degrees from SDSU, she added. According to her, her mother studied there for almost 20 years until graduating two years later than her daughter.
