Elizabeth Vargas was born on September 6, 1962, in Preston, New Jersey. Her father, Rafael Vargas, is a Colonel in the United States Army, and her mother, Anne Vargas, is a housewife. Her childhood was spent shifting from post to post in Germany and Belgium. Elizabeth later earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri in Columbia. She made her broadcast debut as a reporter/anchor for NBC affiliate KOMU-TV.

She soon found herself working at CBS-owned WBBM-TV in Chicago. In 1993, she left CBS after four years to join NBC News. She later became a newsreader for ABC’s Good Morning America.
