After pleading guilty last week, one of the three men accused of killing Egypt Covington is now eligible to testify in the prosecution. According to D’Wayne Turner, Covington’s brother, “This set the stage for the prosecution of two other violent suspects.”
In connection with the 2017 fatal shooting of Covington inside her Van Buren Town duplex, Shane Lamar Evans pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. As a result, the charges of felony murder and first-degree trespass have been dropped. When Evans is sentenced on May 4, he could face 15–25 years in prison.
Lindsay Turner stated, “He will testify against his cousin and brother.” Lindsay is referring to the men accused of murdering Covington, Timothy Eugene Moore, and Shandon Ray Groom. Later this year, a trial will be held.
According to Evans’ testimony, the men attempted to break into a neighbor’s duplex in Covington to get marijuana. Evans said he indicated which door to break in before leaving. He didn’t find out that Moore and Groom were on the wrong side until the next day. That will happen sooner, according to D’Wayne, and we look forward to seeing the other two men behind bars.
According to D’Wayne and Lindsay, the guest seeking justice offers many lessons for anyone who might be in a similar situation, waiting for justice. “There are no timelines or guidelines for this. We can advise them to be patient as the legal process will take some time, D’Wayne said. Covington was murdered in 2017, but it was not until the Michigan State Police took over the investigation that her attackers were arrested.
“Our family and everyone who knows and loves Egypt is going through a very difficult time. “We are encouraged by the efforts of Wayne County prosecutors this week and the way the case appears to be going. “We are optimistic that things will move quickly towards a fair conclusion going forward.”
