Efren Manalang Reyes was born in Mexico, Pampanga, Philippines on August 26, 1945. He moved to Manila when he was 4 years old. He then started working as a billiards waiter at his uncle’s billiards room, where he studied many sports. He wasn’t very tall at that time, so he used to stand on a Coca-Cola barrel while playing. He often sleeps on the pool table at night. He is often referred to as The Magician and Bata. His co-workers call him “Everybody.”

Efren Reyes started playing pool in the 1960s and quickly established himself as a winner, allowing him to compete in important events and tournaments. He was a member of the Philippine team that competed in the 1978 RP-Japan Pocket Billiards Tournament.
In the 1983 Philippine Professional Pocket Pool Championship final, Reyes defeated Pepito Dacer. In the 1980s, he went to the United States to compete at the international level.
