Ames, the last living member of the singing brothers quartet, passed away on May 21 from Alzheimer’s disease, his wife, Jeanne Ames, announced on Saturday (May 27).
Ames’ work as Mingo, an Oxford-trained Native American, in the 1960s Daniel Boone adventure series, starring Fess Parker as the famous border guard, is perhaps what makes he is most famous on television. He was also the focus of a skit on The Tonight Show, as his incredibly precise ax aim became one of the show’s most enduring surprise moments.
Ames regularly performed in musicals, delivering hit songs like “Try to Remember” and what would become his biggest hit single, “My Cup Runneth Over.” He also made guest appearances on TV shows like Murder, She Wrote, and In the Heat of the Night.
He and his brothers were one of many pop quartets active in the 1950s music scene, including the Four Aces, the Four Lads, the Gaylords, the Hilltoppers, the Lancers, the Four Knights, the Ink Spots and the Mills Brothers, who are still active to this day. However, Ed, Joe, Gene and Vic Ames have a distinctive voice because they are bass and baritone, not tenor.
Their singles “Rag Mop,” “Sentimental Me,” and “Undecided” were huge hits, and they went on to have a busy career that included performing in nightclubs and auditoriums nationwide as well as appeared on variety TV shows.
Rock ‘n’ roll replaced pop music in the late 1950s and quartets became less popular. Meanwhile, the Amese family had grown weary of the constant travel and distance from their increasingly crowded family. The big moment for Ed was when his wife asked their 3-year-old daughter, “Who is it?” after he unexpectedly came home. One of the Ames Brothers, the girl retorted.
To a reporter, he said, “It worked.” “My brothers and I decided that we should go our separate ways because we had enough already.” The band, earning $20,000 a week, performed their last show on January 1, 1961, at the Sahara in Las Vegas.
After not being able to become a famous solo singer immediately, Ed decided to pursue acting. Before joining the production of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, he nearly lost his home.
He performed the song “Try to Remember”, which became one of his theme songs, in the hit musical The Fantasticks. He joined the cast of Gower Champion’s Carnival touring before moving on to the New York cast for the show’s final performance.
He was next best known for playing the stoic Native American in the 1963 Broadway production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, based on the novel by Ken Kesey, with Kirk Douglas and Gene Wilder, in one part. heralded his future appearance on Daniel Boone.
At Las Vegas casinos, hotel dinner clubs, and during his long tour of the musicals Man of La Mancha, Fiddler on the Roof, South Pacific, and I Do, I Do, Ames made a lot of money.
His most famous tune, “My Cup Runneth Over”, which won gold in 1967, was produced by I Do, I Do. In 1968, he scored another hit with “Who Will Answer?”
He was part of what has been called the biggest extended laugh in The Tonight Show’s history during his tenure on Daniel Boone.
