Dr. Joyce News

After training at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse, Dru Joyce III is the type of coach who can challenge his players to a push-up competition.

Joyce, 37, reunites with Keith Dambrot, who coached him in high school in St. Vincent-St. Mary and was in college at the University of Akron, when he was hired as deputy head coach at Duquesne in May. Joyce and Dambrot are a successful player-coach team.

For starters, Joyce is an important member of St. Vincent-St. The Mary teams Dambrot has coached have consecutively won state championships in the Ohio High Athletes Association in 2000 and 2001.

LeBron James was Joyce’s fighting Irish teammate, another Akron native who later became one of Dambrot’s young basketball students.

James and Joyce are best friends since childhood who always wanted to play basketball together. At St. Vincent-St. Mary, their dream came true.

Through his journalist, James claims that Dru has always been a leader. He was always really meticulous and dedicated to the game and getting better, even when we were young. He has a nasty streak and a burning desire, and that’s one of the qualities that makes him a good player.

He would bring it in every day, and that’s something we were all drawn to. I always respect him for not wasting a day not striving to be better.

After graduating from high school, James and Joyce broke up. The first was first picked by Cleveland in the 2003 NBA Draft, while Joyce played college basketball at Akron under Dambrot, who was later named Zips’ head coach.

By the time Joyce ended his college career in 2007, he was on two All-MAC teams and set a record for assists at Akron with a total of 503. In 2019 , Joyce was inducted with Dambrot into the Akron Zips Athletics Hall of Fame. Dambrot has a 13-year track record of 305-139 and three MAC titles.

After graduating from university, Joyce began a 12-year competitive career abroad, which took him to Germany, Poland, Russia and France.

He retired in 2019 as the Bundesliga’s all-time leader in assists, having spent most of his ten seasons playing in Germany.

Joyce switched to coaching once his playing days were over, working as an assistant at Cleveland State from 2019 to 22.

Dennis Gates’ CSU Vikings has won consecutive Horizon League championships in 2021–2022 with Joyce on the coaching staff. Joyce has established a close relationship with the guards he trains because he has spent time working with Duquesne’s team.
