The sudden and unexpected passing of Dr. Garrett Marie Deckel, a distinguished psychiatrist based in Maryland, has left her family, friends, and colleagues grieving the loss of a remarkable woman. At the age of 56, Dr. Deckel, who was not only a renowned professional but also a beloved mother, wife, daughter, and friend, passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2023, at her residence.
Dr. Garrett Deckel was born in Louisville, KY, and raised in northern Virginia. She pursued her education with great dedication, earning her undergraduate degree at Barnard College, followed by a Doctorate of Philosophy from Princeton University and a Medical Doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Dr. Deckel underwent extensive training at Mount Sinai Medical Center and the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. She was proudly certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
A pioneer in her field, Dr. Garrett Deckel was actively involved in various professional organizations, including the American Psychiatric Association, the New York County Medical Society, the American Psychoanalytic Association, the American Professional Society of ADHD and Related Disorders, and the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation (ISSTD). As a faculty member at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Psychiatry Department, she contributed significantly to the advancement of her profession. A memorial service to celebrate Dr. Garrett Deckel’s life will take place on Sunday, October 29, 2023, at 11:00 at Riverside Memorial Chapel in her cherished Upper West Side neighborhood. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory can be made to the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation (ISSTD), a local animal shelter, or a charity of choice, reflecting Dr. Deckel’s deep compassion for both her profession and the world around her.
