Thomas is a 17-year-old African-American young man ready to start college at Penn and escape the heterosexual pantomime imposed on him by his parents in Larry Benjamin’s novels, mainly set in Philadelphia.

In a new novel, a local author examines AIDS’s first love.

On his first day at college, Thomas meets his roommate Dondi, an outspoken, hedonistic wild kid who has access to anything he wants thanks to his trust fund. The two entered into a lavish friendship pretty quickly. Dondi introduces Thomas to the gay and high life by taking him to nightclubs and buying him expensive Piaget wristwatches.

Thomas is intentionally drawn into the vortex after being seduced by Dondi both in and out of the bedroom. But he often finds it hard to keep up with the Dondi family and rushes from party to party.

Thomas commented on his newly discovered luxury life, “Often that summer I would feel as if I had stumbled into an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel.” While lavish parties and opulent mansions are reminiscent of “The Great Gatsby,” Thomas is more like Holden Caulfield from “The Catcher in the Rye,” who is more organized and less blind.

One scene in particular, in which Dondi’s father strokes Thomas’s hair, has a near-but far more subtle homophobia than the exchange between Caulfield and his mentor in Salinger’s novel. . Thomas explores his new surroundings with curiosity and almost as soon as he enters Dondi’s sphere of influence, he begins to develop feelings for Dondi’s brother Matthew.

However, as Thomas and Matthew’s relationship grows stronger and Dondi’s jealousy grows for a large group of men, their world, protected by privilege and ignorance that rich brought, began to disintegrate.

The second half of the book is about the struggle to escape everything, from the inevitable reality of AIDS in the 1980s, as opposed to the first half’s passionate submission to the consequences and a willingness to escape. to enter into a lush and adventurous life.

But Benjamin did the right thing by introducing us to the characters long before such ghosts appeared in their lives. We learn more about men who were in a healthy, happy state before they got sick instead of just suffering and slaves to illness.

The character’s reaction to the AIDS issue from the outset reflected the public’s ignorance of those early years. None of the characters are aware of the illness until it directly affects them and there is no sense of urgency or panic.

But as soon as it sinks in, they start looking for immediate solutions. But just like in real life, their efforts were fruitless. Sadly for the men, no miracles have been found and no other worlds can be bought with any amount.

Characters participate in several historically debunked conspiracy theories regarding the origins of AIDS at a time of greatest upheaval. Even if the outburst seemed out of place in a non-controversial story, such thinking was prevalent at the time.

There has been widespread distrust of the medical establishment and the government. What’s even more aggravating is the fact that once the disease has broken out, nothing can be done to stop it or stop time so politicians and medical professionals can catch up. A before and after were present. And many find it hard to survive what comes next.
