Two days after being assaulted and beaten in a cell, the former nurse’s aide was dubbed “Death’s Angel” after he admitted to killing 32 patients in hospitals in Ohio and Kentucky. passed away on Thursday.
Donald Harvey, who is serving a life sentence, was found wounded in his cell at the state prison in Toledo Tuesday afternoon, according to officials. He was 64.
He was beaten when an unidentified person entered his cell, according to a patrol report, although specific details of the attack were withheld.
In 1987, Harvey admitted to killing 37 people – most of them patients in Cincinnati and London, Kentucky, hospitals where he worked as a nurse assistant. He later testified that while working at the Cincinnati Veterans Administration Medical Center, he killed 18 more people.
While working at Kentucky’s Marymount Hospital in 1970, he informed his former attorney that the murder had begun. He says he is trying to end the suffering of his victims and many of them are patients with chronic illnesses.
According to prosecutors, Harvey poisoned most of his victims with arsenic and cyanide, regularly mixing them into the hospital meals he gave them. He drained the oxygen tanks of several patients, causing some of them to suffocate.
Harvey worked as a nurse assistant at Cincinnati’s former Drake Memorial Hospital, where the 21 victims he killed were patients. After a medical examiner smelled cyanide while performing an autopsy on a victim, he was arrested.
Harvey claimed to a journalist that he preferred to control who lived and died after pleading guilty to avoid the death penalty.
