Dominic Vasquez Obituary: Joseph Vasquez dies at the age of 24 in Ohio

On Wednesday, August 30, 2023, Dominic Joseph Vasquez, aged 24, departed this world to join his Heavenly Father. Born to Pedro Vasquez III and Jackie (Birmingham) Vasquez, Dominic’s life was a testament to the power of passion, compassion, and a heart that knew no boundaries.

Dominic, a graduate of Bedford High School in 2017, embarked on a journey of self-discovery and education at the University of Toledo. However, his true calling lay in the skilled craft of carpentry. He embraced his role as an apprentice in the Carpenter Local 687 Union, dedicating his talents to constructing and creating with his own two hands. Notably, he took immense pride in contributing to the construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge.

Yet, Dominic’s character extended beyond his professional pursuits. He possessed a competitive spirit but was also a gentle soul who invested his time and energy in supporting differently-abled students during his time at Bedford. His mission was clear: he wanted everyone to feel a sense of belonging. In the world of sports, Dominic excelled as a wrestler, earning a place as a State tournament finalist in his senior season at Bedford, where he secured a 6th place finish in Michigan. His prowess extended to the wrestling mat, where he became an All-American NCWA wrestler and secured a Top-8 national finish in his weight class. His national Greco-Roman championship added to his impressive wrestling career. Even after retiring from wrestling, he channeled his energy and passion into softball, becoming a dominant force on the diamond.

Dominic’s nights were often spent on the softball field, where he forged deep friendships and secured numerous championships nationwide. His love for sports extended to his support for the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cleveland Browns, and he never missed an opportunity to engage in lively debates about the rivalry with his father.

Beyond sports, Dominic was a staunch advocate for fitness, relishing in the company of friends, music, and cold beverages. His friends were like family, and he treated his family like friends, a testament to his warm and welcoming nature.

As a big brother to five siblings, including his close friend and brother Isaac, Dominic held a special place in the hearts of his younger siblings, Mathias, Isabella, Alexandra, and Gabriella. To them, he was a hero, and his presence could light up any room. His memory, often affectionately referred to as “Dum-Dum,” will forever remain irreplaceable.

Dominic is survived by his loving parents, Pedro and Jackie Vasquez, his siblings, and his Welo Pedro Jr. and Wela, Rita Vasquez. He leaves behind a multitude of aunts, uncles, and cousins from both the Vasquez and Birmingham families. He is preceded in death by his grandfather John Birmingham Sr., grandmother Patricia Birmingham, and his uncle Robert “Bobby” Birmingham.

Visitation to honor Dominic’s memory will be held on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Thursday, September 7, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Walker Funeral Home, located at 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey Rd.). Funeral services to celebrate Dominic’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, September 8, also at Walker Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests contributions be made to the Ohio chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention at 3189 Princeton Rd. Suite 174, Hamilton, Ohio 45011, in honor of Dominic’s memory. Dominic Joseph Vasquez’s legacy will continue to shine brightly through the lives he touched and the love he shared with all who knew him.
