DJ Casper ‘Cha Cha Slide’ creator dies aged 58 after cancer battle

DJ Casper, known for his stage name, has passed away at the age of 58 after a courageous battle with cancer. Willie Perry Jr., as he was known offstage, gained fame as the creator of the infectious dance track “Cha Cha Slide,” which topped the charts upon its release in 2000 and has remained a staple at parties ever since.

Recognized for his all-white attire during performances, DJ Casper’s real name was Willie Perry Jr. He left us on Monday, seven years after being diagnosed with two forms of cancer. In an interview just three months before his passing, he revealed that he had lost a significant amount of weight during his health struggles but remained determined not to give up.

Even in the face of adversity, DJ Casper expressed his commitment to pressing forward: “If you know me, you know I’m not gonna stop. I’m going to continue to go,” he said. He encouraged people to keep doing the Cha Cha Slide as a symbol of perseverance through life’s challenges.

Discussing his diagnosis, DJ Casper revealed, “They diagnosed me in 2016 with two forms of cancer, which is renal and neuroendocrine, which is kidney and liver. They went in to try to do surgery, and they found out the kidney was connected to the main artery, so they decided not to do it.” Instead, they chose to focus on treatment.

Following the news of his passing, tributes poured in. Many recalled how his music had brought joy to various celebrations, from family reunions and weddings to school dances. The Cha Cha Slide, also known as Casper Slide Part 2, made its debut in 2000 and went on to achieve international success, even topping the UK charts in 2004.

DJ Casper initially created the song as an aerobic exercise routine for a relative, particularly his nephew who was a personal trainer at the time. Its popularity prompted him to produce a second version, which ultimately became a global hit.
