Rhode Island mourns the loss of a true hero, Devon Quigley, the son of golf legend Dana Quigley. In the early hours of Sunday morning, the Quigley family announced the passing of Devon, who gained his wings and found freedom from the world at the age of 39 on the 28th of October 2023.
Devon’s journey was marked by unimaginable courage and faith. In 2011, he faced a traumatic brain injury following a devastating car accident. Despite the challenges, he emerged as a source of inspiration, embodying strength, dignity, and unwavering faith throughout his ordeal.
Born in Lynnfield, Massachusetts, Devon pursued his education at the University of Rhode Island, graduating in 1969. While his early years in regular tournament golf might not have attracted widespread attention, he made significant contributions as a club professional, winning 18 local tournaments in the New England area.
In 1980, he showcased his talent on the PGA Tour with an impressive sixth-place finish at the Greater Milwaukee Open. However, it was in senior golf tournaments where he truly shined. Devon’s entry into senior golf in 1997 marked the beginning of a remarkable journey. He triumphed at the Northville Long Island Classic, establishing himself as a prominent figure in senior golf.
In 2005, at the age of 58, Devon Quigley made history by becoming the leading money-winner on the Champions Tour, claiming the coveted Arnold Palmer Award. His remarkable record of 11 tour victories and his enduring dedication to the sport inspired generations of golf enthusiasts.
Devon’s legacy of courage, determination, and faith will forever remain an inspiration. His nephew, Brett Quigley, following in his footsteps, continued the family’s proud tradition in professional golf, a testament to the indomitable spirit of the Quigley lineage.
As Rhode Island mourns the loss of this extraordinary soul, let us remember Devon Quigley not only for his achievements on the golf course but also for his unwavering courage and resilience in the face of adversity. His legacy will continue to inspire and uplift us all. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Quigley family during this difficult time.
