Cowley claims that she can’t stop thinking about the first article she wrote about Knowles for Reader’s Digest. As a result, she decided to give up her journalism career to volunteer for the initiative.
The Library Tree: How a Canadian Woman Brings the Joy of Reading to a Generation of African Children was written by Cowley sixteen years later. She will be in Winnipeg on Thursday night telling her story.
In Africa, Knowles first started reading to a small group of children in her yard. That number quickly grew to 70. She was forced to convert her garage into the first of many libraries in underdeveloped communities.
“Knowles realizes that schools do not provide children with what they need. The rooms are cramped, there are no books and they are not taught to read. According to Cowley, she’s changing that, too.
She continued, “Her libraries do more than just help children learn to read. “They offer more than I could list,” I said. The difficulty in staffing the libraries was great and still exists to this day.
Kathy insisted on getting written permission from the local government before agreeing to pay employees, according to Cowley.
“Librarians are the ones who engage children, make them feel welcome and teach them how to read. They are very important.” Librarians are the ones who engage the kids, make them feel welcome, and teach them how to read. They are very important.
Cowley has met many children who have benefited from these libraries during the 15 years of witnessing and working on the project.
After his parents died, Martin moved in with his brother. She claims that when they were in middle school, they went bankrupt.
Because of his speciality and talent, he was awarded a scholarship to attend high school. Since then, he has achieved remarkable things, such as writing plays and instructing younger children. Moreover, he is the author of 17 plays.
There are already seven libraries in Accra, Ghana’s capital, and in spring 2014, the OSU Children’s Library Foundation will open an eighth children’s community library. The project will be the largest to date.
