Regarding his profession, Dean Smith started his career with Walsall, who were relegated in 1989-90 under John Barnwell. They finished 16th in 1990-91 and 15th in 1991-92 under new manager Kenny Hibbitt.
Dean joined Hereford United for £80,000 in 1994, a club record. John Layton led them to a 16th-place finish in 1994-95. Graham Turner captained Edgar Street to the 1995-96 Third Division playoffs. Darlington beat Edgar Street 4-2 despite Smith’s early goal.
In August 1997, he signed with Leyton Orient for £42,500. 1997-98: 10 goals in 51 games. Orient would have made the playoffs if not fined three points. He led Orient to the play-offs in 1998-1999, scoring a penalty in a shootout win over Rotherham. His team lost 1-0 at Wembley to Scunthorpe United.
