David Rathband News
The day after Raoul Moat fled after shooting Samantha Stobbart and Chris Brown, traffic police officer David Rathband, 42, was sitting in his patrol car near East Denton, Tyne and Wear. Twelve minutes after Moat called 999 to declare war on police that day, the officer was shot in the face as he approached Rathband’s car. I noticed nothing – no emotion – when I looked into his eyes. Then I experienced severe pain in my face,” Rathband told The Sun. “I knew my eye had just disappeared and my right eye socket had exploded.
When David Rathband was transported to Newcastle General Hospital, his head and upper body suffered serious injuries. Moat contacted police again just 50 minutes later, with no regard for the officer, according to The Guardian. Rathband was hospitalized for 17 days. More than 200 pistol bullets remained in his skull and he lost sight in both eyes.
Sadly, David never recovered from his injuries and he admitted to contemplating suicide a year after the shooting. He said in an interview that “I am not a robot, I was severely affected by what happened” (via The Sun). I have to wait and see, but as long as I am confident enough to continue.
David Rathband was found hanged at his home in Blyth on February 29, 2012, about 18 months after being shot by Moat. He later divorced his wife, Kath, with whom he had two children.
He claims that David often complains to him that [police] service forces him to jump through hoops after being shot. “They fight for his money. They refused to pay for the specific cane he requested to walk. After being shot, he needed dental care, but they weren’t willing to cover the cost. I think waiting over a year for any form of specialized counseling contributed to his eventual breakdown and suicide.
“We are committed to providing assistance to any officer injured in the performance of their duties.”
Before leaving the UK, David visited Darren, who moved to Australia in 2008. Before leaving, David sent out a number of disturbing tweets, including one that read: “Loss of sight My senses, my career, my wife, and my marriage. … I will be back on Monday and will say goodbye to my children.
