Dave Rover’s Story
He had no desire to go to war at all. He received his draft notice at the height of the Vietnam War. He joined the Navy instead of the infantry because he didn’t want to serve in the infantry, and in Vietnam he was the riverboat gunner Brown Water Black Beret.
David was charred after eight months of duty in Vietnam when a phosphorus grenade he was about to throw exploded in his finger. He spent fourteen months in the hospital as a result of the incident, undergoing several major surgeries. The miracle of his life and survival.
He is an excellent communicator and has given speeches in many venues, including businesses, men’s and youth conferences, public schools, and military sites. Dave regularly appears on national television talk shows. He founded and continues to work as a missionary in Vietnam and other countries.
He discusses topics that are important to his audience and offers possible solutions using examples from his own life. Dave creates a story of strength, devotion and survival to move and transform the people he tells. He often draws from his combat experience about loneliness, peer pressure, distortion and heartbreak, as well as successes in life. His faith and the positive relationships he has with his parents, wife, children, and grandchildren are the foundation of his hope.
The Navy Department addressed its flaws by giving Dave a Purple Heart and some additional service medals 34 years after his injury. He is uniquely qualified to speak at the request of military members because he served, was wounded, and rehabilitated during the war. He is frequently asked to speak to military personnel stationed at home as well as those serving abroad in Iraq and elsewhere.
In appreciation of Dave’s life and great contributions, he received an honorary doctorate in May 2005. Rover Missionary Association (REA) and Rover Education Support Program (REAP), both nonprofit organizations based in Fort Worth, Texas, founded by Dave Rover. He also serves as their president and president.
