Calgary, Alberta – In a shocking incident that has left the community in mourning, 18-year-old Danillo Canales Glenn lost his life in a deadly stabbing at a basketball court in Copperfield, Calgary. The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, and has raised concerns throughout the city.
Calgary police were alerted to the assault with a weapon at a basketball court on Copperstone Road S.E. around 7:45 p.m. Officers arrived to find a young man with apparent stab wounds. He was rushed to the hospital in a life-threatening condition but tragically succumbed to his injuries.
According to the authorities, Danillo Canales Glenn and two friends were at the basketball court when two unidentified individuals approached them, sparking a brief altercation. During the altercation, the victim was subjected to bear spray and stabbed by the suspects, who fled the scene and are currently at large.
The victim has been identified as Danillo Canales Glenn, an 18-year-old resident of Calgary. Police have described the suspects as two males, both believed to be between 16 and 18 years old, standing at approximately five feet eight inches tall.
The first suspect was wearing a navy blue zip-up hoodie with a thin black stripe, black pants, and black shoes at the time of the incident. The second suspect was attired in a light grey zip-up hoodie with a thin black line across the chest to the back, black jeans, black shoes, and a rectangular Gucci fanny pack worn across his chest.
Staff Sgt. Brad Moore of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit expressed condolences, stating, “A young man has lost his life, and several people who were present at the time of the incident have been left traumatized by this senseless confrontation. We recognize that the community of Copperfield is shaken by this incident, and many are concerned for their safety as the suspects remain at large. Please know that we have determined this to be an isolated matter and there is no risk to the public.”
This tragedy marks the 13th homicide in Calgary for the year 2023. Police are now seeking assistance from the public to identify the two male suspects.
