Career

From 1953 to 1958, Blocker taught English and drama at a high school in Sonora, Texas; then, he was a 6th grade teacher and counselor at Eddy Elementary School in Carlsbad, New Mexico, and a teacher in California. Before that, he worked in rodeo entertainment and as a security guard at a nightclub as a student under him. Blocker joined the United States Army during the Korean War. He received basic training in Fort Polk, Louisiana. Actor Blocker played The Goon in Outer Space Jitters.

Blocker played Cloudy Sims, an equestrian artist playing poker, in the 1958 “Rodeo” scene on Richard Diamond, Private Detective, where an equestrian artist named Ed Murdock, played by Lee Van Cleef shoulder, was killed before he could perform his final execution at the annual event in Madison Square Garden. Blocker played Eric “Hoss” Cartwright in the 1959 television series Bonanza. Before his death, he appeared in 415 episodes of the show. In 1963, Blocker co-starred with Frank Sinatra in the comedy Come Blow Your Horn. In 1968, he reunited with Sinatra in Lady in Cement, portraying a menacingly focused character.

Blocker appeared in the 1970 series Cocky Cowboys of Calico Country. He also appeared on The Flip Wilson, a comedy show. While managing the scenes for Bonanza, Sheriff Robert Altman became acquainted with Blocker. He cast Blocker as Roger Wade in The Long Goodbye, but Blocker died before the series began. At the time, Sterling Hayden was cast in the role and Blocker was assigned to direct the film. Likewise, in 1963, Blocker started and received half ownership in the profitable Bonanza Steakhouse restaurant chain in exchange for being an agent of their business and presence at the organization.

Blocker”; Three relatives, his father, mother and sister, are buried near him.
