Damien Green, student of Mayes Academy School, dies in Englewood shooting

The Englewood community is grappling with profound grief following the tragic loss of Damien Green, a student at Mayes Academy School, who was pronounced dead after a shooting incident. Damien, just 12 years old, became the latest victim of violence in the Englewood area on the night of Sunday, October 22, 2023, according to the Chicago Police Department.

In a poignant gathering at a park recently renamed after another young member of the community who fell victim to violence, residents expressed their distress over the deteriorating safety situation in the area. Marlon Hammond, a staffer at Englewood Outreach, described the situation as “absolutely heartbreaking,” underscoring the community’s sorrow and frustration.

The lifeless body of Damien Green was discovered on Monday, lying in the center of Lowe Street near the intersection with 67th Street. His great-grandmother recounted Damien’s recent activities, including attending church and playing basketball. Damien, a sixth-grade student at Benjamin Mays Academy, was known for his vibrant spirit and dedication to his studies.

Michael Tidmore, overseeing the Safe Passage program at the school, ensured the safe transportation of children after each session. Tidmore also played a pivotal role in the initiative to rename the park in honor of Ryan Harris, an 11-year-old girl who was tragically raped and murdered in Englewood in 1998.

The loss of yet another young life in the neighborhood has further intensified the community’s call for immediate and effective measures to address the escalating violence and ensure the safety and well-being of Englewood’s residents.
