While most computers come with a recovery drive included, many of us want to do a clean install using a Windows 10 ISO image.
In this post, we will see how to burn Windows 10 ISO image to USB drive and create bootable USB media for installation purposes. First, you need to download the Windows 10 ISO image file. Check out our guide on how to download ISO image files from Microsoft’s website. Once you have downloaded the file, we can proceed to the next stage of creating a bootable USB drive.
Create bootable USB media
Once you have the ISO file on your computer, you can proceed to create a bootable USB drive. There are many softwares that can be used to create a bootable drive and some of them are ABUSB, Rufus, Microsoft Media Creation Tool, WinToFlash, etc.
However, we will see how to use Rufus and the Microsoft Media Creation Tool.
Let’s start with Rufus.
Using Rufus:
Rufus is a free tool that can be used to create a bootable USB stick and it offers a portable version so you don’t need to install it.
Just download this free utility from the official link, then plug in the USB drive and open it. You must ensure that you have a 4GB flash drive for the 32-bit version of Windows and an 8GB flash drive for the 64-bit version of Windows.
Now you have to browse through your USB drive location then select the MBR partition scheme for BIOS or UEFI if not already selected. It will ensure that this USB drive is compatible with both BIOS and UEFI based systems. You can leave the rest of the options in the tool to their default values.
Then find the ISO image button in Format Options and browse to the location of the ISO file.
Now that you are ready to create a bootable USB drive, click the Start button, then wait for the process to complete. You must make sure that there is no data on the USB drive, otherwise it will be erased when you click the start button. So, if there is any data present on the USB, you must back it up before proceeding.
After Rufus completes the process, you will have a bootable USB drive with Windows 10 on it. Now you can use this USB stick to install Windows 10 on any of your computers.
Using the Media Creation Tool:
The Media Creation Tool is a utility extended by the Microsoft team that allows you to download a copy of an ISO file compatible with your PC and create a bootable USB media drive to install the media creation tool on. Windows 10.
