Arlington, Virginia mourns the loss of a cherished member of the community, 55-year-old Craig Bomberger, who tragically passed away on Sunday, October 8th, 2023, in a biking incident along the scenic Potomac River. A resident of Arlington, Craig was a loving husband and devoted father to his daughters, Ella and Zoe.
Craig, a native of Munster, Indiana, had called the Washington, D.C. area home for nearly three decades. He was not only a dedicated family man but also an adventurer at heart. Craig’s love for travel and zest for life led him to embrace various exciting experiences, from ziplining to snorkeling. He was known for his warm smile, quick wit, and his title of being a true “girl dad,” always ready with hair ties for his daughters’ adventures.
In addition to his family roles, Craig was passionate about biking, enjoying ski trips, Supper Clubs, and the thrill of roller coasters. His culinary expertise and love for good food were evident in his cooking endeavors. Professionally, he made significant contributions during his 24-year tenure at the Federal Communications Commission, particularly in spectrum auctions that raised substantial funds for the government. Colleagues admired his sense of humor and composure, even in high-pressure situations.
An alumnus of the University of North Carolina, where he earned his degree in international relations and political science in 1990, Craig furthered his education at the University of Michigan, earning a graduate degree in public policy in 1995. His career took him to Capitol Hill, where he worked for the House Budget Committee for four years before joining the FCC.
Craig is survived by his mother, Cathryn, of Dune Acres, Ind.; his brother, Kevin Bomberger, of Indianapolis; and his sisters, Kristen (Gerard) Boston of Covington, La., and Lauren (Patrick) Fischer of Chicago. He also leaves behind nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and countless friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Peter.
The Arlington community remembers Craig Bomberger not only for his professional achievements but also for his adventurous spirit, kindness, and unwavering love for his family. He leaves behind a legacy of warmth, humor, and a passion for life that will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
