Courtney Coco’s case will be discussed on Friday’s episode of “Dateline” on NBC. The body of 19-year-old Coco was discovered on October 4, 2004, in an abandoned house in Winnie, Texas, a small town along Interstate 10 south of Beaumont. But David Anthony Burns has not been charged or detained in connection with the case until April 2021.
In October 2022, Burns – who had seen Coco’s sister at the time of her death – was determined to be responsible. During the hearing, witnesses said Burns and Coco dated while he dated her sister during the trial.
He was found guilty by a Rapides Parish jury of 90 minutes of second-degree murder; This charge carries a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of probation, release or suspension of execution.
After Coco’s family released victim-impact statements in late November ahead of Burns’ alleged sentencing, Burns firmly asserted his innocence. He insisted he didn’t do it and warned her family that knowing he wasn’t responsible would make it impossible for them to find peace.
When speaking to his family in the courtroom gallery, he commented, “You know I wouldn’t do something like this.” “You know I have nothing to hide, nothing to hide,” I said.
After his plea for a new trial was denied, Burns refused to waive the 24-hour waiting period. As a result, Judge Maruy Lauve Doggett of the 9th District Court of Justice allowed the Coco family to proceed with the victim impact statements and sentenced Burns the next day. But Stephanie Belgard, Coco’s mother, showed little affection for Burns. She points to a picture of her daughter and recites a poem Coco wrote in high school about what she wants to do with her life while she cries and yells at him.
She yelled at Burns, “I hate you, and I pray you’ll rot in Angola.” “I really, really hope I never see your face again.” She informed Burns that he had kept them a secret for many years, even after becoming a youth pastor.
Since her daughter’s death, Belgard has taken on a leadership role for the families of victims of violent crime. She is a member of the national organization Parents of Murdered Children and regularly helps other families while the cases of their loved ones go to court.
