Cody’s day probably began much like any other day. He would kill his family. In Hondo, New Mexico, it was a scorching summer day on July 5, 2004. Cody resided on a ranch owned by renowned newsman and journalist Sam Donaldson with his father Paul Posey (age 34), stepmother Tryone (age 44), and stepsister Marilea Schmid (age 13).
The blended family of the Poseys appeared to be content and typical to onlookers. Others with a clearer perspective could see that a few dark demons were around. The family was the only ones who were aware of the full tragedy and wickedness that occurred within Chavez Canyon’s walls, though.
The long-kept secrets finally came to light when Sam Donaldson came across the bloody crime scene that Cody had left behind. It seems unlikely that Cody Posey’s father’s slap in the face was the final straw that caused him to lose it after everything that had gone on before. Paul Posey wouldn’t ever again hit his son after that July 4th smack.
Cody eventually lost it at that point, went outside, and took a shotgun out of his sister’s saddlebag. He approached his stepmother Tryone from behind while she was sitting on the couch reading a book, and he shot her twice in the back of the head. He opened fire when his father Paul entered the house; his stepsister Marilea, who had entered behind his father, was the last victim.
Sam Donaldson visited the ranch on July 6th, the day following the killings, and was met by a scene straight out of a horror film: blood and shattered glass were all over the place.
He alerted the police right away, and they found the shallow graves quickly. The following day, July 7, 2004, two days after the killings, Cody was apprehended and accused of killing his family.
