Coach Rockne Biography, Knute Rockne, Speech, Plane Crash, House

Coach Rockne

He was a serious-looking student at the University of Notre Dame, living in a small hidden room in a gym. In addition, he is the ultimate equipment manager of Knute Rockne.

Anthony “Tony” Schreiner worked in gym restrooms and on gym floors between classes to earn money and keep himself clean. And around that time, he distributed shoulder pads, giant boots, and worm-eaten soccer jerseys to the soccer team.

If it weren’t for the letters he stuffed in a drawer and discovered after his death, his story might never have been revealed. Rockne wrote to Schreiner, whose son Richard would later become chief physician at Riley Children’s Hospital.

Richard Schreiner has just discovered the story of how his father, one of 12 children of an illiterate plumber, got to Notre Dame. Two of Rockne’s three national championship soccer teams showcased what a standout player he was.

And he discovered how close the two were through letters and research after his father passed away. Tony Schreiner, who died in July 1982 at the age of 74, is remembered by Catholic newspaper columnist George Olaf Roche as someone who “knows the beloved ‘Rock’ as well as any man.” He was informed about the aristocratic coach’s worries and sorrows.

Most of the letters that Rockne, who is also the college’s athletic director, sent the manager of the gym’s sleeping equipment, were in the possession of Richard Schreiner.

Like the letter from Rockne’s Gulf Stream Apartments in Miami Beach on February 2, 1930, which he sent while on medical leave. Envelope only addresses: Anthony Schreiner, University of Notre Dame, Indiana, The Gym.
