Arthur Christopher Orme Plummer was born in the Canadian city of Toronto. He is the only child of Isabella Mary (Abbott), secretary of the Dean of Science at McGill, and John Orme Plummer, a stockbroker. He was the great-grandson of Canada’s third Prime Minister, John Abbott (from 1891 to 1892), and the great-grandson of Anglican priest John Bethune. He is of Scottish, English and Anglo-Irish descent. Plummer grew up in Senneville, Quebec, near Montreal.
He speaks good English and French. He began studying to be a concert pianist as a child, but he soon developed a talent for theater and began performing while still in high school in Montreal. He gained a background in acting as a student at the Montreal Repertory Theater.
