Biography

Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo was born on April 10, 1928, in Ijebu Ogbu Oke, Odogbolu Local Government Area, Ogun State, Nigeria. He was the son of Salawatu Anomo Adebanjo and Chief Joel Adedairo Adebanjo. Chief Adebanjo began his education at Saint Saviours Primary School in Elegbaata, Lagos, and continued at Holy Trinity School in Ebute Ero. He later attended the Cathedral School in Lagos before moving to the United Kingdom to study law. He was called to the bar at Lincoln’s Inn in 1961.

Chief Adebanjo’s career was marked by his dedication to public service and his unwavering commitment to the principles of true federalism. He worked for various government parastatals and was a journalist for the Nigerian Tribune. He was also the first organizing secretary of the Action Group, a political party led by the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

In 2021, Chief Adebanjo was chosen to lead Afenifere, a Yoruba socio-political organization, following the passing of its former leader, Chief Reuben Fasoranti. Throughout his life, Chief Adebanjo remained a vocal advocate for justice, equity, and the rights of the Yoruba people.
