News Charlie Tan
In an unusual move, a Cornell University alumnus wrote a letter to a federal judge outlining his motives for killing his father.
After a jury couldn’t agree on a verdict in his father’s death in 2015, a judge decided there wasn’t enough evidence for another trial, saving Pittsford resident Charles Tan, 23, from convicted of state murder. However, Tan was found guilty in federal court of purchasing a murder weapon. Tan fought to get his 20-year prison sentence reduced.
Tan responded to Senior US Judge Frederick Scullin in a five-page letter that was filed in court on Friday.
At the beginning of Tan’s letter, “I feel that these three questions will allow me to express myself most effectively.” “How did you get into this situation? What knowledge have you gained? When given the opportunity, how would you react if/when?”
Tan expressed regret in the letter for not asking for help before killing his father. He testified that his biggest feeling was fear of his father killing his mother.
Tan wrote, “When I told him he couldn’t get his hands on her, he got angry.” He warned me to keep quiet and threatened to kill her if she offended him again.
When I recall those days, it is clear that Tan acted with only 30% understanding of the situation. My mother constantly warned me that he was going to kill her, and all I knew was that she seemed completely defeated. I believe that I must protect her because there is no other way.
Tan admitted that by killing his father, his mother was really suffering. Tan added: “She sacrificed 20 years of her life to ensure that I would have the best chance at every turn, and I missed that opportunity.” I know that she is most annoyed by that. Tan claims that his path forward is clear: to support other teenagers to avoid the mistakes he makes. All I needed, he said, was the chance to do it.
