The winner presented his research, including the first studies of HCV transmission and evaluation of potential drugs in a small animal model using rodents with human livers. They found an inherent, rapidly activated component of the host’s immune response to infections involves a protein called interferon.
Rice’s work with the protein structural genome of the Sindbis virus laid the groundwork for his further work with other infectious viruses. Rice stayed at Caltech as a research associate after receiving his doctorate in 1981. His discovery of the yellow fever virus genome led to the formation of the flavivirus family, which later included viruses. The virus causes West Nile fever and dengue fever. His work aided in the creation of the yellow fever vaccine. In 1997, Charles Rice and colleagues were able to demonstrate that a region in the viral DNA is important in the induction of hepatitis.
The discovery is a milestone in the development of blood diagnostics and new drugs that have saved millions of lives. Charles M. Rice received FDA approval in 2022 to begin human trials of a new monoclonal antibody drug created at Rockefeller.
