The winner presented his research, including the first studies of HCV transmission and evaluation of potential drugs in a small animal model using rodents with human livers. Meanwhile, the Rice facility has focused on pathogens of global significance. They are looking for viruses like HCV, HBV, influenza A, dengue, yellow fever, Zika, and chikungunya. They found an inherent, rapidly activated component of the host’s immune response to infections involves a protein called interferon.
