Chandy Oommen News
Following the passing of Oommen Chandy, a pillar of the Congress and a former chief minister of Kerala, the Kerala government on Wednesday proclaimed a two-day state of mourning.
The 79-year-old Congress leader passed away in a Bengaluru hospital after the news was shared on Facebook by his son Chandy Oommen with the caption “Appa has passed away.”
At 4.25 am, Chandy, who twice served as the chief minister of Kerala, passed away at a private hospital in Bengaluru. He passed away while receiving cancer treatment, according to party sources. Later, on Tuesday afternoon, a special aircraft flew his lifeless remains from Bengaluru to Thiruvananthapuram. The mortal remains of Chandy were transported to Kottayam, the Congress stalwart’s bastion, on Wednesday morning.
The body was transported by road on a low-floor bus that had been specifically modified, decorated with garlands and photos of Chandy, and crowded with party officials and employees.
Around 7.20 am, a sizable group of party members and supporters sent the bus off from his house while yelling chants in favour of the departing leader. Tuesday afternoon, a special plane flew Chandy’s lifeless remains from Bengaluru to Thiruvananthapuram.
He had spent a significant portion of his life in the state capital as a legislator, the Congress party’s leader, and a chief minister during the course of his decades-long political career.
Mourners gathered on Tuesday to pay respects to Chandy, who served the Puthuppally Assembly constituency for 53 years, at Puthuppally House and the state secretariat’s Darbar Hall.
At two places, the St. George Orthodox Syrian Cathedral, and the KPCC headquarters, people paid their final respects to his lifeless remains.
On Tuesday, Chandy was honoured in the state capital by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, his Cabinet colleagues, political party leaders, as well as cultural and religious figures.
