On June 16, Yusuf (also known as Cat Stevens) will finally release King of a Land, the new album he’s been working on for most of the past ten years. The musician revealed the music video for the album’s lead single “Take The World Apart” on Wednesday ahead of its release.
In a statement, Yusuf commented, “Looking at my thorny musical journey, which began as I did in the ’60s, I can say that this new record is a mosaic.” “A very accurate description of who I am and where I have been.”
According to what he told Rolling Stone, the central theme of the entire album is peace. The singer-songwriter declared: “Peace is my first and last stop”. “A lot of my songs are metaphors for finding a place or stopping point in the spiritual realm where we can come out of conflict. There are both internal and external aspects to peace, which is an all-encompassing state of existence.
Although the absence of worldly needs offers some measure of calm, material possessions cannot bring about the inner condition. The heart serves as a yardstick for introspection. Many people refer to a lack of inner calm as “mental stress,” yet the cause of this illness is a heart that has drifted away from its spiritual home.
Former Yardbirds bassist Paul Samwell-Smith produced King of a Land, Yusuf’s first album since 2014’s Tell ‘Em I’m Gone to feature brand new original songs. The bassist and singer-songwriter have performed together since 1970 Mona Bone Jakon. At Hansa Studios in Berlin, where David Bowie cut “Heroes” and U2 cut Achtung Baby, filming sessions began in 2011.
They eventually moved to Yusuf’s personal studio in Dubai, ICP Studios in Brussels, Belgium, La Fabrique in Provence, France, and other locations. At Friar Park, George Harrison’s former British estate, new records were mixed.
According to Yusuf, we had the special honor of being one of the first non-insiders to visit that control room and mix an album while we were at Friar Park.
“From the very beginning, George Harrison had a tremendous spiritual impact on me. It is important that he pioneered a number of concepts and perspectives reaching far east,” he continued. According to the author, you can hear George’s spirit in some of the tracks on this CD. In February, Yusuf performed the Beatles’ national anthem “Here Comes the Sun” in honor of George Harrison, who will turn 80 that month.
