Tragically, Carter Smith was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision. Given the involvement of a commercial vehicle in the accident, the Nebraska State Patrol has extended its support to the ongoing investigation to ascertain the circumstances leading to the tragic incident.
This recent incident echoes a similar accident that occurred in May 2022, involving a semi-truck and a Saturn Aura on Highway 6 in close proximity to Waverly. The collision left a 16-year-old boy critically injured. According to Cody Thomas of the Nebraska State Patrol, the accident occurred when a semi-trailer traveling westbound on Highway 6 attempted to turn left onto the on-ramp for Interstate 80 at the Waverly junction, colliding with the eastbound Saturn Aura.
The driver of the Saturn Aura was entrapped in the wreckage and required extrication before being airlifted to Bryan Health West Campus for urgent medical attention. Fortunately, no injuries were reported for the driver of the semi-truck. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding this previous crash is still ongoing, highlighting the need for continued vigilance and safety measures on the roads.
