Willard, Missouri – The community mourns the untimely passing of 17-year-old Callista Fisher, a senior student at Willard High School, following a devastating multi-vehicle crash involving a Willard School District bus on Thursday evening.
The heart-wrenching incident occurred on State Highway 266 near State Highway AB, claiming the life of Fisher and leaving two other drivers injured. The Willard School District, in a sorrowful statement, conveyed their deepest sympathies to Fisher’s friends and family, urging everyone to keep them in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
The crash unfolded around 4:30 p.m. when an SUV driver exiting the Dollar General parking lot allegedly moved into the path of a westbound school bus, compelling the bus driver, Katherine Lopez, 52, of Willard, to veer across the center line. Tragically, this maneuver resulted in a head-on collision with a teenage driver of a pickup truck, identified as Fisher, who succumbed to her injuries at the scene of the accident.
The collision also caused the school bus to collide with a utility pole, leading to downed power lines that necessitated the closure of the area surrounding the crash site.
According to the accident report, Harold Budnovich, 68, of Springfield, was driving a 2006 Ford Explorer involved in the collision with the school bus. Fortunately, there were no pupils aboard the bus at the time of the crash. Both Lopez and Budnovich sustained injuries, with Lopez transported to CoxSouth Hospital for minor injuries while Budnovich received treatment for serious injuries at Mercy Hospital.
Katherine Marshall Lopez, the bus driver at Willard, Missouri Schools, a graduate of Stoutland High School, resides in Willard, Missouri, and hails originally from Stoutland, Missouri.
The loss of Callista Fisher, a vibrant senior student, has left the community in deep sorrow. Details regarding Fisher’s obituary and funeral arrangements are awaited, allowing friends, acquaintances, and the community to pay their respects and offer support to her family during this tragic time.
