Caleb . Bond News

Welfare recipients have long urged that politicians adopt their lifestyles temporarily to gauge how well they respond to them. Unlike most politicians, I can now claim success.

Granted, nine days is a lot less time than most people spend helping, and the TV crews filmed me all the time. But even so, it can offer an insight many people won’t have the chance to witness or experience.

I definitely had some assumptions before accepting the role in the SBS drama Can You Survive the Line? I venture to say that’s part of the reason why they invited me to join.

My distaste for the welfare state, both personal and corporate, is well known. I have what I would describe as a “normal” working-class background, so the only benefit I have ever received was in the form of a family tax benefit.

Therefore, I can firmly state that the public housing and welfare situation in our country is worse than one could imagine as a newcomer. To illustrate, I recently spent the night with Pierre, a man who lives in a housing commission flat in Surry Hills, Sydney.

People will put trash cans outside when they’re full because the housing committee won’t provide the building with enough bins or empty them regularly.

Rats are naturally attracted to that. They are everywhere in the world. The housing commission didn’t show up to pull up a few floorboards to remove a dead rat underneath Pierre’s floorboards.

For a week, they locked him in a hotel so the rat could decompose and get rid of the smell. Previously, he struggled with mold in his bathroom because the housing committee didn’t install a fan. He could stay in a hotel for that fan price and more. But sadly, the system doesn’t seem to care much about actually rescuing those in need from their predicament.

And if that’s not the goal, you’re just condemning people to suffering for the rest of their lives. I support individual initiative and competence, but you need to lend them a hand.

Pierre and others told me they wanted to be able to work a bit to increase their allowance because they couldn’t work full-time or couldn’t find full-time work. However, they risk losing their entire benefit if they do so, which would put them in a worse situation.
