Brittney Griner is one of the most famous WNBA players of her generation. Despite only having one WNBA championship, she has cemented her place as one of the tournament’s all-time greats. This is one of the reasons why her arrest in Russia was widely condemned by the Americans. However, the Phoenix Mercury star was returned home after several attempts. The simple answer is that Brittney is not transgender, which means she was born female. She was identified as a homosexual woman and came out many years ago. Raymond Griner rejected his daughter, and Brittney became estranged from her father. She was once dubbed the “golden child” but everything changed when she came out as gay. Raymond reacted violently when he heard about it and even kicked Brittney out. Despite the fact that they had quarrels, in the end Raymond accepted his daughter.

Griner came out as a lesbian in an interview with SI.com on February 11, 2013. During the interview, she also revealed that she was bullied as a child, saying: “It’s hard. Simply pointed out for being different. Everything, from my size to my gender. She says she is passionate about working with children to raise awareness about bullying, especially bullying of LGBT people.
Griner had previously debuted her parents in high school, which her father graciously disapproved of, forcing her to live her senior year with an assistant coach. In My Skin: My Life On and Off the Basketball Court, a memoir she co-wrote with Sue Hovey about bullying and self-acceptance, was published in 2014.
Since his release from detention in Russia in December 2022, Griner has advocated for the return of others wrongfully detained abroad.
