Tre Living was hired by the Leafs on Wednesday, making him the team’s 18th general manager overall. In a statement released by the franchise, Tre Living said, “I am delighted and honored to join Toronto Maple Leafs as general manager. “I would like to express my gratitude to Brendan, MLSE and the Board of Directors for their support in this process.
“I am delighted to be joining the Original Six team and aware of how important the Maple Leafs are to this neighborhood. For myself and my family, today is a really exciting day.
Shanahan added: “I am delighted to welcome Brad to the Maple Leafs organization. With years of experience as the general manager and executive director of hockey in Calgary, Arizona and elsewhere, Brad brings a wealth of information.
“During his time in the NHL, he earned a lot of respect from his peers and built the best relationships with people at every level of the game. We are confident that Brad’s management ability and strategic perspective will propel the Maple Leafs in our ongoing title quest.
The 53-year-old was Flames’ general manager for nine seasons, during which time the team made five playoffs, before coming to an agreement to part ways on April 17. British Columbian formerly spent seven years as an assistant general manager of the Phoenix Coyotes (before they changed their name to the Arizona Coyotes) and seven years as president of the Central Hockey League.
In other words, Tre Living has not faced many challenges during his tenure as hockey executive.
In particular, two issues stand out with the Leafs: the situation with No. 1 center Auston Matthews, who could extend his contract on July 1 — the same day the no-move clause goes into effect — and the situation with center number 2.
