Salem, N.H. – Bill James, the dedicated coach of Methuen High School’s wrestling team, is facing a challenging battle after a tragic accident that occurred on Monday, September 4, 2023. The local community has shown an outpouring of support for Coach James, coming together to offer prayers and assistance during his difficult time.

Mark Skandier initiated a GoFundMe campaign to provide financial support for Coach Bill James, who is now dealing with medical expenses and related costs. The campaign initially aimed to raise $100,000. At the time of this report, a total of $72,170 had been raised, thanks to contributions from 713 individuals. Coach Bill James has made significant contributions to wrestling programs in New England throughout his career. He achieved a remarkable milestone during an exceptional season when the team secured 18 wins, 2 losses, and 1 tie. Coach James achieved his 400th career victory while leading the Rangers, adding to his total of 519 wins. His coaching journey has included stints at schools like Ipswich, Bishop Guertin in New Hampshire, and Hamilton-Wenham.

Coach James’s connection with Methuen dates back to the late 1990s when he started as an assistant coach. In 2001, he assumed the role of head coach. Under his guidance, the Rangers achieved an unforgettable unbeaten season in 2012, culminating in a Division 1 state championship. Over the past 21 years, Coach James has led the team to seven Merrimack Valley Conference championships.

Even when faced with the challenging task of rebuilding the team after 11 starters graduated in 2021, Coach James remained dedicated, serving as a teacher, mentor, coach, and inspiring leader. To many Methuen High School wrestlers and students, he is a true hero. Coach James understands the immense responsibility he holds for every student at MHS, and his unwavering commitment to wrestling, family, and his students serves as a living example of his unspoken wrestling code, which he has generously shared with many during their time at MHS.
