Just a month earlier, it had become public that Sills had incurable lung cancer and was seriously ill. Edgar Vincent, her manager, reported that she passed away on Monday at around 9pm

Sills earns followers around the world outside of the music industry thanks to a look that matches her childhood nickname, Bubbles. The laid-back red-haired diva regularly performs on “The Tonight Show,” “The Muppet Show” and makes public appearances alongside Carol Burnett.

Together, they performed “Sills and Burnett at the Met,” a presentation from the Metropolitan Opera stage that featured raucous duets and humorous quotes.

The nation’s living rooms were filled with Sills’ rich, contagious laughter as she hosted live TV broadcasts even after the public stopped hearing her perform in 1980. She was interviewed people backstage for the Metropolitan Opera’s high-definition cinema performances as recently as last season.

The original Sills became a star thanks to a rapidly growing career that helped put Americans on the map of opera artists around the world. She was given the nickname Bubble by her midwife after observing that she was born blowing a bubble of saliva out of her tiny lips. Bubbles was named Belle Miriam Silverman when she was born in Brooklyn.

In 1947, it was those same lips that once again showed excellent vocals when making her operatic debut in Philadelphia with a small role in Bizet’s “Carmen.” Sills rose to fame at the New York City Opera, where she made her stage debut in 1955 with Johann Strauss Jr.’s “Die Fledermaus.” She has received critical acclaim for her portrayal of three Tudor queens in Gaetano Donizetti and Douglas Moore’s soap operas, including “Baby Doe’s Ballad,” “Manon,” and “Giulio Cesare.”

One of her most famous roles was as Baby Doe in the 1958 story of a silver mining magnate who left his wife for Baby Doe and ended up dying penniless.

Sills said in her 1976 book, “I loved the role. “I read every article about her that was ever published. During those five weeks of studying opera, I absorbed her so thoroughly that I was familiar with every aspect of her. I’m Little Doe.
