Palatka, FL – The Palatka community is reeling from the devastating loss of 16-year-old Baylee Faith Holbrook, a vibrant student at Palatka Junior-Senior High School, who tragically lost her life after being struck by lightning while hunting with her father in Putnam County. Baylee, a beloved member of the community, had been in critical condition since the accident on Tuesday afternoon.
On Thursday morning, Baylee succumbed to her injuries, leaving family, friends, and the Palatka community heartbroken. In a display of unity and support, over 100 people attended Thursday evening’s prayer vigil for the Holbrook family, highlighting the significance of prayer and faith during these trying times.
Baylee’s father, Matt, who was also struck by lightning during the incident, is recovering and is expected to be okay. Baylee was a student, a varsity cheerleader at Palatka High, and an active member of Trinity Baptist Church in Palatka. Known for her inclusivity and kindness, she had a positive impact on everyone she met, transcending social and peer groups.
Her father “Matthew Holbrook” pour tribute by sharing a post which reads,
“Baylee Faith Holbrook you are my best friend. Our 16 years together you have made me better. You’ve made me a better man. A better father. You’ve made me a better soldier for Jesus. People say we raised you but I feel you raised everyone you’ve ever been in touch with. From when you could speak I realized you had the same problem or gift depending on who you ask or how long we’ve been talking that I have. I did my best to give you my good and shield you from my bad. We’ve walked through every battle hand in hand every success, every failure. We talked just as much smack to each other as a person could possibly stand. You’ve told me when I’m wrong even when everyone else agrees with me. You’ve loved me on those days when I felt defeated and constantly told me to give my struggles to Jesus. Everyone knows our opinion whether they wanted to hear it or not. Handing you to your Heavenly Father today is something I thought I’d never do but something you’ve been preparing me to do all along. I have peace knowing your with HIM and you are able to change so many peoples lives. When storms come Walmart sells out of water. When our storm came our Walmart sold out of bibles. My baby has had nearly 100 people give or rededicate their life to Jesus today. I’ll never have to question the “why” because of that. Thank you baby for not being selfish and giving so many what you already knew. I love you Baylee Holbrook and your bestfriend will continue doing your work here. Keep showing the world your light baby girl.”
Baylee’s strong faith was a pillar of her life, and it continues to inspire and comfort those who knew her. In an act of profound generosity, her parents have decided to allow the use of her organs to give other children a chance at life, a testament to her enduring spirit of service.
The community is coming together to support one another and seek solace during this challenging time. Mental health services, prayers, and heartfelt condolences are being shared to remember and honor the life of Baylee Faith Holbrook. The Palatka School District is ensuring continued support for Holbrook’s family and friends as they process this tragic loss.
As a facebook post shared by Angel Frisvold stated:
“After we got the news of Baylee Holbrook passing into the gates of heaven this morning at 9:32am. The kids started calling and texting to be checked out of school. I want to give a huge shoot out to Palatka Jr – Sr High School for all the love they’ve shown these kids this week. They’ve gone above and beyond for sure. Thank you Kathy Oyster.Trinity Baptist Church had their doors open at 12 for anyone that wanted to come and pray, cry or just sit there. Pastor Karl Flagg spoke and prayed. within a few minutes the house was full and so many were outside. Everyone moved to CLO to celebrate Baylee , food was donated by so many of our very own local business. Thank you to all that donated and helped set up.It was a time of fellowship for our community. Laughter , stories of Bill and just some good ol quality time.At 6 pm everyone gathered to lift Matt , Casey and Kylee up in prayer as they process this life changing time for their family. There was standing room only and a few in the balcony. There were probably ( don’t quote me) ten pastors from Putnam county there tonight. When the invitation was given at the end if anyone wanted to rededicate or trust Christ as their Savior tonight. I’m going to tell you, they just kept coming down front.”
Baylee will be remembered for her faith, compassion, and impact on the lives of many. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those she touched, and the community remains steadfast in their support for her family during this time of grief and healing.
